CHINESE POETRY -- 8 DECEMBER 2000
Note: This was a class assignment. We were given five situations and asked to write about them in a style similar to some Chinese poetry we had studied.
Voices of the Autumn Woods
A thousand reds follow my footsteps
As crisp winds tear through my hair haphazardly
There's a chill in this silence, and
A chill in the whistle of the wise tree's limbs
The Trees are Reverent at First Snowfall
Gentle light thrown carelessly over
The orchestrated meanderings of snow
About autumn's bare-branched trees
So easily overcome at its touch
The Lakeside Fire Drinks of Night Sky
There is life in the manner that the flames
Leap toward stars and lap at the sky
There is life in reflections of damp-wood smoke
On the water's deep shimmering blue surface
Reverie in the Midafternoon Church
Candle-smoke pervades the stained-glass light
Incense follows lonely echoes down empty aisles
Wooden benches polished by the touch of believers
Distant footsteps fade away and silence consumes
So Small Compared to the Open Sky
Feeling so small next to the open window
Wintry air mingles with furnace-warmth
Shifting, my small chair strains to speak
With the clicks and hums of a well-lived house
