A REVELATION -- 23 AUGUST 2000
when i see you, and hear you, and know what you allow me to know,
the sky doesn't seem so bright, and trees don't whisper, as though
they understand the way i do and can hear my thoughts, so,
their silence is enough to warn me, advise me, to tiptoe
because out of what may even be called reverence, they flow
for fear the air will shatter and be taken into the undertow
and again they whisper silently (only to me, only an afterglow)
again their careful caution: parlez seulement comme il faut
as if no-one else would find what they implied, in indigo
skies, each facet now taken away, all care now forsaken
but of course they're innocent and their course is mistaken
and eventually those words will, no doubt, waken
the leaves and the clouds from their ignorant sleep
as then this consciousness will, no doubt, seep
through the broken air and into me and into you, deep,
as though they finally knew that we too were asleep
fast and if they knew better they'd hurry or we'd disappear
into a world where they weren't so much as here,
where they were on the other side of the air, unable to steer
the thoughts they continued to hold away, to hold so dear,
since they knew what they thought didn't matter at all, least not
to us because we hadn't fought against their misdirection
because enough was only a reflection and not so wasn't what we sought
and beside us, we finally reply: we do not worry about the sky
because a grin misunderstood is all that they knew, they could
not touch what we held up; the light shone right through
as if we both meant to warn against mistaking you! and
finally they realized what you and i always knew
and that is, what isn't understood shouldn't be taken away to
somewhere where they don't think the way we do.
